Use this interactive Incoterms 2020 chart to see who is responsible for each step of a shipment. Pick a rule and it shows who handles export clearance, loading, freight, insurance, unloading and import duty, and exactly where risk passes from seller to buyer. The full chart of all 11 rules is below.
How to use the Incoterms chart
- Choose the Incoterm in your quote or purchase order.
- Check who pays for each step and where risk passes.
- Compare it with the full chart to see what changes with another rule.
- Email yourself the PDF to attach to a quote or share with a supplier.
Which Incoterm should importers use?
For most importers, FOB (or FCA for containers) is the safest choice. The seller clears the goods for export and loads them, and you control the main freight with your own forwarder. See EXW vs FOB vs CIF vs DDP for the full comparison.
Do Incoterms decide when I own the goods?
No. Incoterms set costs, tasks and risk. Payment terms and ownership are agreed separately in the sales contract.
