This page explains what information Cargo Basics (cargobasics.com) collects, why, and what you can do about it. Cargo Basics is run by Afzal Jamil, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Questions about your data: hello@cargobasics.com.
What we collect
1. When you request a demurrage report
If you ask the demurrage calculator to email you a PDF report, we collect your email address, the numbers you entered (container type, dates, free days and rates) and whether you ticked the box to receive freight cost tips. We use this to create and send your report, and we keep a record of the request on this website.
We only send you freight cost tips if you ticked that box. Every tips email includes a way to unsubscribe, or you can email us and we will remove you.
2. When you leave a comment
If you comment on an article, we collect the name, email address and website you enter, plus your IP address and browser details to help detect spam. Your name and comment are shown publicly. Your email address is never published.
3. When you browse the site
We use Google Analytics and Google Search Console to understand which pages people read, how they found the site (for example Google, Bing or an AI assistant like ChatGPT) and roughly where visitors are in the world. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information such as pages viewed, device type, browser and approximate location. We do not use this to identify you personally.
Our hosting provider also keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and pages requested) to keep the site secure and working.
Why we use it
- To send you the report you asked for.
- To send freight cost tips, only if you agreed to receive them.
- To show and moderate comments.
- To understand how the site is used and make it better.
- To keep the site secure and prevent spam.
If you are in the UK or EU, our legal bases are: carrying out your request (sending your report), your consent (tips emails, analytics cookies where required) and our legitimate interest in running and securing the site.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your information. We only share it with the services that run the site:
- Hostinger, which hosts the website and sends our emails.
- Google (Google Analytics and Search Console), which provides visitor statistics.
These providers may store data outside your country, including in the United States. They are required to protect it.
How long we keep it
- Report requests and email addresses: up to 24 months, or until you ask us to delete them.
- Comments: for as long as the comment is published.
- Analytics data: for the retention period set in Google Analytics.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the EU and UK GDPR, Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act or Australia’s Privacy Act), you can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or withdraw your consent at any time. Email hello@cargobasics.com and we will reply within 30 days. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
Children
Cargo Basics is written for businesses and is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
