Use this free FCL vs LCL calculator to decide whether to book a full container or share one. Enter your shipment volume, your LCL rates and the price of a 20ft container. It shows the total for each option, which one is cheaper, and the break-even volume where a full container starts to win.
How to use the FCL vs LCL calculator
- Enter your volume in CBM and the gross weight.
- Enter your LCL quote: the ocean rate per CBM, destination charges per CBM and any fixed fees.
- Enter the all-in price of a 20ft container, and a 40ft if your cargo is over about 26 CBM.
- Compare the totals and the break-even volume.
How is the break-even calculated?
Break-even CBM = 20ft price ÷ LCL cost per CBM. Example: USD 2,400 ÷ USD 170 per CBM = 14.1 CBM. Below that, LCL is cheaper. Above it, book the container.
Why include destination charges?
LCL quotes often look cheap because the ocean rate is low, while unpacking (CFS), handling and documentation fees at destination are charged per CBM. Comparing only the ocean rate is the most common mistake.
When should I choose FCL even if it costs a little more?
When the goods are fragile or valuable, when you need them on a fixed date, or when you are close to the break-even. FCL is faster and handled far less.
